'Candy game'

Mary Prior KC, handling the case, described Ruben's offending to the legal proceedings.

She stated his victims were children from difficult backgrounds who were participating in a summer camp which he ran.

Ruben played a "treat game" with the youngsters, Mrs Prior said, in which he would go into the sleeping quarters when they were getting ready for bed and tell them to eat sweets "rapidly".

She informed the proceedings the man had engaged in this activity with the children "repeatedly", and children had previously fallen ill the next day.

She said Ruben had been successful in rationalizing this repeatedly as the minors being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepson had suspicions in recently.

The legal representative added: "Recently" his stepchild had worries about what was going on, with valid cause.

"They decided to have a look in the individual's items."

The prosecutor said items including lubricant, Vaseline and syringes were discovered, and his family member contacted the police about his suspicions.

She stated the defendant went on to play the "treat game" with six boys that time - that Saturday - and they were all sick the following morning.

"Authorities" had not gone out by that time," she continued.

The regulatory agency, the police conduct office, earlier informed that it was examining the police response of the incident.

The legal representative explained the youngsters were struggling to walk due to their condition, so the stepson called the police again.

She explained the man then conducted the "sweet game" in a room of five minors.
